TAI eSwatini Fellowship

In partnership with Africa NTJILO Empowerment

GUEST FACULTY: MONIQUE VAN WILLINGH

June 2019

Our partnership with Africa Ntjilo Empowerment features the unique opportunity for musicians and educators to collaborate with the first orchestral music program in eSwatini, formerly known as Swaziland. Africa Ntjilo is an el sistema-inspired program working to develop the first orchestra in the country in addition to creating the first formal music school, providing training to pursue careers as musicians and music educators in eSwatini.

TAI fellows lead classes, rehearsals, instrument sectionals, teach private lessons, work with the Ntjilo’s faculty on professional development, give workshops, and perform with and for the students, families, and larger eSwatini community.

During the day, TAI Fellows are honing their teaching skills through collaborative workshops, visiting local cultural sites like the Milwane Wildlife Sanctuary & Mantenga Nature Reserve, and working with and alongside other fellows, students, and faculty of Africa Ntjilo Empowerment. At night, fellows are absorbing the TAI curriculum which prepares the next generation of musicians with tools for the classroom, being a global citizen, and using one’s artistry for community development.

As TAI eSwatini Fellows, you will be housed in the Ntjilo director’s home with TAI faculty, staff, and the other TAI Fellows. The house is located within the eSwatini’s capital city, Mbabane, near many restaurants and shopping malls. Africa Ntjilo Empowerment’s headquarters is located just a short 10 minute drive away from our home base. In the distance, you can see the picturesque, beautiful mountainside of the town.

Our guest faculty for this year will be Monique Van Willingh!
